Lost my job

Options
I'm absolutely devastated. I work as a nurse/head of care and it hasnt worked out well for me. It was my first post in a senior role and, despite asking for help, and it being a very stressful job, it hasn't worked out and my employer (who I really liked working for) has served me one month's notice.
I've never been unemployed, I don't even know where to start. I was on a really good income and its a huge blow to us as a family as hubby doesn't make the same income I did - I was the main breadwinner. We have two teenagers still in education at college and we privately rent our home and have been here for 10 years.
I really don't know where to turn, where to go to, I just feel like such a failure and have let my lovely family down. Can someone please advise me what I need to do or where to get advice from?
Thank you.

Quickly get a job as a band 5 so you don't lose your entitlements to annual leave and your pension bits. Then you can look around and see if you want to apply for band 6 positions (or band 7 if you were there). For now, just concentrate on getting a job.
Have you thought about agency work? Thornbury pay very well but you would lose your NHS bits (if you are currently an NHS employee.

How long had you worked for this particular employer.
  • I work in the private sector as a psychiatric nurse and have only been with this employer since April 2013. So far, I'm sending my cv everywhere locally but living in such a rural area, it is going to be hard to find a post. Right now, I'll settle to anything that brings a wage in and isn't incredibly stressful.

    Seconded.

Private experience, and also senior role will be a huge bonus NHS-wise at the moment.

  • Thanks for all your advice. This weekend had been reeling for me, I can't think straight. Hubby has been fantastic (as he always is) and he's going to contact all relevant people for advice on benefits, housing, etc when he is off on Tuesday (I'm not) and any appointments we will attend on Friday when we are both off. I've sent my CV left, right and centre to everyone and anyone. I've sat and thought on my career...do I want to continue being at nurse? I live in such a rural area and posts for psychiatric nurses are hard to come by, and are mostly in the private sector where there is always a constant battle for money to provide good care. Do I want that stress? I'm having an informal chat at Marie Curie tomorrow for a six month senior nurse post and an interview for an assistant manager housekeeper at Parkdean. Two very different roles, one much more money than the other, yet one much less stressful than the other. You know, you get one life and for a lot of my career, its been hard, yet it was all I ever wanted to do and now I feel sick at the thought of carrying on. Is it really worth it? The daft thing was, I wanted to better myself and am halfway through the second year of a two year business and management unit course, now with a large debt and no idea now what to do with it. Still lots of thought and decisions to make, especially regarding how to manage financially if i decide to not return to nursing as it will be a huge blow to the household. I hope not to make the wrong decision again.
