Thanks everyone. I do have to buy everything I use at work myself.
Can someone please simplify this. What form do I need to fill out? P87?
Do I fill one out for each year ? So 4 different ones?
Do I just send those alone?
Please someone who has done this explain?

On the p87 do I just put the total for that year in 'section 4, other expenses' and not list every tool individually ?

do not use the P87 form if your claim is for more than £2,500 in any one tax year - read the notes, don't see how this can be made any simpler.

there is one form per tax year, hence in the top right you put in the year date

yes you use section 4 listing the items you purchased in that tax year (6 April - 5 April)

it would be better to list the totals of each receipt as then you have a perfect trail between what you are claiming and the receipts you hold. The receipts then provide the exact details of the individual tools should HMRC challenge you.

If you do not have receipts you cannot claim

Thanks everyone. I have an activity log
From my tool dealer listing all purchases not individual receipts. Will this be okay? Should I send this aswel??

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Send in the form, nothing else. If HMRC require any further information/evidence at a later, that is the time to send in the activity log (whatever that is)
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not.
  • Hi I was just wondering if I fill out the p87 form to claim the money back on my tools as I'm in the same boat. Do I put the price after the vat in for each tool or the amount I want to claim back?
