A question about the Samsung Galaxy S4

I noticed something odd a couple of days ago and wonder if anyone can throw any light on it.
I own a boat and when on the boat I put my SIM card in a cheap HTC Radar in case the worst happens and it goes over the side.
I know there are waterproof cases etc. but I had the HTC laying about doing nothing. Very MSE :money:
When I was on the boat last week I was irritated to find one of my contacts wasn't on the HTC, I knew it was on the S4 as it was a recent contact and boat related and I use Google, GMail, Calendar, Contacts etc. so that everything should be in sync across all my devices.
When I got back yesterday I checked the S4 and there it was but a closer look showed it was stored on the device and not on Google, as were a few other recently added contacts.
I fixed that by merging the accounts but adding a new test contact defaults to device, you can select Google but it isn't something I've ever had to do before.
It seems to be a recent thing. Has something changed with a phone update or have I inadvertently changed a setting somewhere, unlikely as I don't mess with the settings, I'm always adding contacts and they used to default to Google.

One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
