Diesel Convertible - Megane or 206 /207?

Previous car written off last night :(

I am sick of having sensible cars, hoping to move overseas in 2 years and time for a bit of fun in between. However, I do around 23,000 a year, mostly out of my own pocket, so needs to be economical.

Amazed to find diesel convertibles with good MPG exist :T. Narrowed it down to:
Megane 1.5 dCi Privilege or Dynamic
Peugot 206 1.6 HDi Allure
Peugot 207 Sport or GT
Any others I should look at (had a brief look at the Focus but something about it put me off)?

Looking to spend around 3.5 - 5.5k, 06 oldest I'd consider, no more than around 60,000. At the moment I'm looking for general opinions, will post links when narrowed down a bit. Obviously the Megane is quite a bit bigger, but Peugot would be big enough. My only 'must have', apart from diesel, was A/C or climate control which these all have.

I'm edging towards the Megane purely based on looks :o, but it does seem to have good reviews.

Thanks.

Oh, me in a convertible :D :rotfl:

Do you need 4 seats ? if not have a look at the Tigra, I had the 1.8 but there is a diesel version.
It was a good car to drive and great fun with the roof off

    Ford Focus CC

    307 CC

    Saab 9-3 CC

    Vauxhall Astra Twin top

    VW EOS

    Mini Cooper 1.6D Convertible

    Volvo C70
  • With all of the hardtop convertibles there is a fairly universal problem with leaks (talking from experience unfortunately). Need to both check there arent any currently and ensure that you have a good regime of both clearing all the drain aways/gutters etc and using the silicon goop on the seals to keep it water tight.

My EOS had a leak into the boot, which of cause went straight into the tyre well which of cause is where VW decided to keep the electronics and hydrolics for the roof killing both of them. £3,500 repair (goodwill from VW thankfully) and 2 weeks later it rained again and same thing happened. This time a warranty repair from the garage. Had to go back another 3 times to get it fully water tight but thankfully no more dead electronics.
  • i'd say buy on condition rather than the model its self

my mother (in her 60's) has a nice little hardtop convertible, its well maintained and in good shape, you see identical models driven by cretins that are in awful shape.

I'd take my time and find the right one

    shame mx5's are not diesel!

Thanks all. Looked at 2 Meganes today, both lovely looking cars, probably drive one tomorrow. Dearer one in better condition not surprisingly.

Going to see some Peugots and Astras as well :T

Don't like the back of the Fusion. Saab too big. No Minis in price range (plenty petrol ones with ridiculously low MPG ). No Eos's near me. No Volvo's in price range with reasonable mileage. Will keep watching brief on them though.

Can see I'll need to read up on what goes wrong and what needs done regularly.

    Thanks again.

Diesel and cabriolet.. Nooo.. Do you really want to listen to that diesel lump with the roof down?

Petrol engine all the way for a convertible.

Realistically I won't be driving with the roof down that often (nice day for it today though :(). At least it will drown out my singing ;).

Seriously though, I need good fuel economy and they only way I can have a 'fun' car which fits in with all my other priorities (i.e. retiring 10 years early!) is to go with a diesel one. It's either a diesel convertible or no convertible, I already spend over £200 most months on diesel, hate to think what the sexy mini convertible that does around 30 to the gallon would cost me .

    Get the 206.

Cheap as chips - difficult to give them away tbh, and not too unreliable.
I think the newest are 2006

Meganes are dirt cheap for a reason- Renaults are even more unreliable.

Make sure whatever you get has the key to manually wind the roof back up, you will need it.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
