ADT alarm system

Today I rang up to enquire about a home alarm system from ADT, they were keen to give me advice and even came out today. Before I even had time to think about it I'd signed up for their system and a monthly fee.
Now thinking about it the system isn't police monitored and the outside box is just a dummy. The system is wireless and even the control box runs off a plug rather than mains. For £250 I know I can do a lot better. (Never mind the £24 x 48!!)
Do companies like this honor a cooling off period? I feel like it's all been too rushed. Half of the conversation was around keeping the kids and family safe etc and I almost feel like I've been conned.
Does anybody know any independent registered alarm installers in the West Midlands?!

No idea but it's a bit late for reflection now, I'm asking a specific set of questions for reply not putting myself forward for judgement on a poor decision.MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0

I believe if you enter into a contract at your home you have a 7 day cooling off period where you can cancel the contract. The sales person should have left you details of this ? it may be in the very small print of any documents they left with you. Just phone them up and cancel and to be safe also write to confirm the cancellation0

Has it actually been installed yet?Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0

I'm sure you have a cooling off period.
However - we had the system installed and didn't read the tiny small print... We were signed in for 3 years! Have just cancelled contract and they informed me that they will send an engineer around to remove the system! Is this right???0 -

any electrician can put you in an alarm....hell the wireless ones you can do yourself....dont know about a cooling off period must be somethng on the back of the contract???? certainly would look into it monitored alarms are a joke....you just need something that sounds when it goes off not like anyone is going to hang around once something goes off.....crazy how many ppl go for ADT or other monitored makes....all the best my friend, hopefully sorts it self....0 -
Read the T&C's that by law you should have been given, if signed in your home you should have a 14 day a cooling-off period.

Cancel it in writing sent by RD: not by phone or email, to avoid any comebacks. And cancel the DD if one was set up.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Emm no sorry any electrician cannot install an alarm system Let me explian there are 2 types of electrician Domestic and Industrial / Commercial the majority of the Domestic guys can run cables and connect things up ie storage heater or immersion heater but don't ask them to fault find or repair them.
Another thing is do not get suckered into this registered installer or monitored system tosh why well one of my customers was paying £200 per year for a service contract and they got a discount on their home insurance good ? nope why ? well the discount was £20 but the catch was if they went next door for a cup of tea and were broken into they were not covered because they did not set their alarm. What ! that cannot be right yep she found out that when she went on holiday she was not covered as her teenage son never bothered to set the system.
That was 6 years ago when she cancelled her contract and paid the extra £20 insurance she saved £1200 from the alarm company but paid £120 extra on her insurance . Then paid me her local alarm / electrician £90 to service and change the battery after 5 years0
