after renting my house for over 25 years,
I brought my house off the council.
in 1998. it was valued at £50000,
I was and have been in the tax band c,
last year they put me up a band,
now pay more council tax.
when I shortly get my new bill for 2014 2015.
it will be in the higher band,
the house is the same as I brought it back in 1998,
why and can they put me in a higher band,
thanks sam.

Have you just purchased it? Any modifications carried out by the council that increased its value wouldn't increase the banding until the property is sold. These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0 -

no I brought it in 1998,
as a right to buy. until 2012 I was and have always
been in tax band c, but last year they put me in band d.

Assuming you're in England or Wales the council has no say in the matter, it's the responsibility of the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). Have you asked the Valuation Office as to why it was re-banded ?.been in tax band c, but last year they put me in band d.
Unless there was a sale/ transfer of ownership and the band was changed due to modification of the property then it could only have been changed if the VOA made the decision the property had been wrongly banded in the first place.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
OP i suggest you ask the council for a reason0

You can check your neighbours band online (can't remember the site but google it). If they are all D you might be a bit stuck - that said I am on a lower band then 35 flats in my block exactly the same as mine because I was the only one that ever appealed it.
The moral is check and appeal....0 -

As has been mentioned rebanding and valuation are done by the valuation office agency not the council.
