hmm ok, I wonder how they decide though what is the appropriate amount of rent you should pay in the area you live. I could probably find a rental place for £450 so would the OR say that I had to move there. That's a bit pedantic I suppose but how do they decide what the 'going rate' is? This house is a 3 bed town house. I've got 2 girls, age 16 and 6. My 16 year old would rather live in the front garden (we don't have a front garden) than have to share with her sister :rotfl: but will the OR expect them to share?

I know there's no straight answer - i'm just thinking out loud really.

They wouldn't expect them to share. You live in an average house.

It doesn't sound as though you have a penthouse flat in Mayfair, or a country estate complete with swimming pool and tennis courts. In which case, the appropriuate amount of rent is the amount you are actually paying.

No. This is a straight answer. Unless you are paying an absurd amount of rent, your rent will just be accepted. The OR is not going to tell you to move anywhere cheaper, let alone say your children have to share a room.
  • thank you longtermplanner for your reply. I spoke to Stepchange about this a few days ago and they also confirmed that this is the case.

    Thanks again.

No sorry, this is not the case.

Gaaah! That should have read 'wouldn't' They would not expect them to share.

Are you paying rent that is astronomical, or living in a luxury house much larger than you need?

If you live in a house that has a value somewhere between highest and lowest for the area I can't see it being argued.

Apologies for my tardy typing in original reply.

Hi and thanks for your advice. This site is amazing, it really is. I'm here every day now, and Stepchange are fantastic too (and free). Now that i've stopped paying the debts that i'd been managing the phone calls have started. Stepchange gave me the template letters to send so they've gone off today - hopefully things will quieten down again.
  • Can i know the age criteria to open an account
  • WW so once you know you are going BK do u stop paying the creditors or continue ? and those dreaded phone calls is it best to tell the creditor your going bk ?
