Epson compatible cartridge's

I have always used Epson compatible cartridge's for my printer an SX445W but it has decided that the compatible cartridge's are not recognized and the printer will not play ball and I ended up using Epson' own cartridge's.
As far as I know I have not updated the firmware so what is going on and rectify the issue?
