Edited to add when you say a couple of years ago, do you mean not last summer but the summer before? If so, I wouldn't worry about that. It wasn't your fault it was the weather. It was a trully awful year for grow your own. No amount of perfect, by the book, work that you would have done could have altered that. Its just the way it goes, and for all we know this year could be the same.

Yes I did mean the summer before last, the weather was bad but in hindsight, I don't think I planted them deep enough either.

Thanks for the info re Swift potatoes, I will have a look in poundland :) Swift and Javelin are in my local poundland.[/QUOTE]

In general spuds need to be 6 inches deep and of course the foilage earthed up when it appears. That applies to both soil grown spuds and container bag grown ones. I find spuds grow very well in container/bags but I do add home made compost /fertiliser/ and because its a seaside town, seaweed.

Manure in the soil is not enough on its own.

Fertiliser- organic-blood fish and bone (sometimes)

Not organic-growmore, or national growmore-dig for victory ww2 and all that.

As I always recommend to any gardeners-join your local horticultural society. You can buy loose fertiliser weighed, onion sets, seeds, weed killer, bean sticks and so on. Around here membership only £4-00 per year. Worth every penny.

That's a brilliant idea, I will look into that this weekend.
