Had tree professionally cut but did not know it had a TPO

I was actually curious to see if any other trees have a TPO in the garden, because i may well cut a few of them down.

In our borough, the TPOs are all held manually in old foolscap files, and it costs £15, and a week or two, to see what they say. Nothing on the web at all.

That's why you pay a solicitor to check for you before buying. Unfortunately all solicitors make contracts where you basically agree that no matter how incompetent they are you have to claim against them, and thus are screwed if something like a TPO doesn't turn up.

Thanks to everyone who has posted, currently we are waiting for the "under caution" letter to arrive. We have spoken to a solicitor who has advised to go and see the council guy in person and discuss it further. The council said to my wife when she first called "We will continue to look into this matter and may prosecute if it is in the public's interest to do so" I fail to see how what we have had done is in the public's interest, surely the council spends money sorting this out, so do we, and no-one really gets anything out of it in the end. I can't sellotape the bits of tree back on!
