in Credit cards
Hello!
I recently raised a complaint with Halifax and just wanted to know if anyone could help!
Basically,I took out a credit card with Halifax about 5 years ago and maxed out the limit which was £1500.i then paid of the majority and cut up the card and have been paying the minimum payments each month which the Halifax took by direct debit.I have been paying the minimum payments now for two years which is not ideal but is ideal for me at the moment!Stupidly I hadn't really been checking the balance on the account because I knew the minimum payments were coming out each month.i opened a letter from them last month to say my balance was £286 but my limit was £200 so I was in arrears.
I'm confused as to why Halifax allowed me to go over when I haven't used the card in years.I then received a letter to say they would refund me £326 I occurred in charges which I thought was great.
When I called they said they could only transfer that money onto my credit card(that I no longer have) instead of my current account because I still have an outstanding balance.
Is this correct?i feel like they haven't really understood my complaint
Thank you!:)

Yes they can offset the "refund" against existing debt. Bonus is though, it's gone!0

You're debt free.
Be happy.

I understand the £200 balance but I still don't see why I should pay the £86 fee when I should of never of gone over the balance in the first place as I was not using the card and paying the minimum payments every month?Should they not take the £86 off of the balance?0

What £86? When did they reduce the limit. It is possible you owed £286?
It could also be if you've been ignoring it and plodding along and it's an old card. That in fact your minimum wasn't clearing the interest so your balance could've been creeping up each month, then sending you over. This doesn't happen with new rules.
If that's the case, I'd bite their hand off for what they've given.0
