Something is far wrong here.
You need to go back and check all the info you've posted.
E46? 225/50 16?
Style 29 is a 15" size for E46s
If you have style 29 with 225/50 16s - you have the wheels from a 5 series and the tyres for a 3 series 330i or a 330d.
It never left the factory like that.
Exactly which E46 is this?
To check what it was fitted with when it left the factory put the last 7 digits of the VIN Nr. in here:

Thanks Iceweasel, the look of the rims are as per style 8 and 29. Finding it difficult to match the pics to the rim I have. I think now it might be style 42, but I havent much knowledge around this area.
I'll take a look at the vin number when I return home and locate the documents.
For the moment thinking of sticking to the 225/50 and as force ten suggested get the fitters to check.
Thank you.

I didnt read to much into the OP picking style 28 from the website they also said they look like style 8 which is off an 8 series so could be anything really
but it wouldn't be a surprised if the car has a set of wheels off another model car, with second hand alloys being sold for very little money on the web there are probably many cars running different wheels0 -
Silly advise to give seeing that OP has not said if the rims are factory or aftermarket. If it doesn't say in your manual, I'd check with BMW whether its an approved size. Otherwise there could be insurance issues downstream.

Keep in mind if you change the tyres from the manufacturers spec then you should really speak to your insurer as this is a notifiable change!0
