Tax rules for mid year start of job -

Hi ,

I moved to UK in september 2013 and prior to that I was a citizen from an Asian country. I have 2 questions --

How my tax allowance will be calculated for financial year 2013-2014.
Am I eligible for entire allowance of GBP 9440 or will it be divided per month ( as my salary is per month ) and I will be entitled for allowance for the number of months I served in UK ??

How my income will be calculated for this financial year.. if my package is 40K per anum , on what income will my tax be calcuated for this year ( as I will only earn the 6 month income in UK )

Even though you won't have worked for the whole tax year you still have the whole year's allowance to use. What is your tax code as that will tell you how much you can earn before tax,

  • My tax code is 944L which is the temp code. So I'm not really sure in which band I will fall for this financial year.. 20% band or 40% band.

Actually that is generally the standard tax code for all employees. It would normally have week1/ month 1 for emergency tax.

A £40k package will not get you into 40% tax bracket even with a full year.
