Ideas for storage above stairs

I've just removed the ugly cupboard that was over the stairs. My thinking is/was to have a big wardrobe spanning from the left hand wall to the far side of where the cupboard was. It's approx 2.5metres wide. There would be probably 4 sliding doors floor to ceiling (the middle two being mirrored). I was then going to build/buy the insides to suit.

The initial plan was to make the wardrobe shallower but if I do run sliding doors all the way across the front it will be just over 1metre deep as I can't bring the slope over the stairs further in.

However, I only have about 5cm depth for the doors before it brings it in front of the blue wall on the right which leads to the bedroom door. Does anyone know whether this will be enough?

Or, does anyone have any other ideas what I can do. I'm loathe to put the cupboard back in because it seems like such a waste of space which I could really use as wardrobe space.

If you choose the depth of wardrobe you want, then rather than having the wardrobe door skim over the front of the bulkhead, you could build the frame so the doors stop just next to the bulkhead and finish it by creating stud walling across the last bit where the doors can't slide. You'd just decorate that new wall as per the rest if the room. The area above the stairs would be accessible inside for storage still and you could probably still completely hide the bulkhead if the front of it became part of the new wall - essentially, you just extend the exisitng right hand blue wall further into te room by a foot or so.

To be fair, 5cm may just be enough for it to slide across the front, you'll have to look at the sliding door manufacturers. We have used the ikea sliding doors without using the wardrobe frames.

It doesn't even need to be sliding doors, you could do a new build developer style built in wardrobe with stud walling and double doors.

The 'stairs box' in our small room is probably double the size of yours and is just a boxed area. However, earlier phases of this design had, as standard, a bed built over the box, with a small cupboard supporting the length of the bed.

Could you mount a bed on yours and then use the bed's space for a wardrobe ?

If not you just build out a small corner to accomodate the door depth. Flexi plasterboard would enable you to have a curved edge.

  • I would have a low level pole for hanging clothes and build shelving over for anything else that needs storing

So the storage would be hidden inside the wardrobe, and it'd look like it was just part of the wall. That could be a plan. Thanks. :)

Do you have any pics or references for the last part of your reply as I can't visualise it. Thanks again. :)

    Hi
We have a similar size bulkhead in our spare room. We had a wardrobe built (floor to ceiling) in MDF and painted the MDF to match the walls. We have shelves in our wardrobe but you could just easily put a hanging rail inside and use it as a wardrobe.

If you'd like a photo, PM me your email address and I'll send you one over.

Picture 4 of 6. You're building a whole stud wall and putting doors in it. In essence, it's a new, tiny room. The pic has three small doors, but you could have two big ones that match the other doors in your house.

    I like sliding doors though.
