Incorrectly on Business Tariff - can I reclaim VAT?
Hi,
Wondering if any experts in the field may be able to help.
We moved into our property in November 2011. It's a rented property, private landlord. The electricity supply is with EDF and is via a prepayment meter (electricity key).
Only recently I have discovered that the premises has been incorrectly on a Business Tariff with EDF, since we moved in and possibly before this. I have spoken to EDF (how I discovered the error) and they are now in the process of switching me to domestic.
My question; as business electricity is normally charged at the higher VAT rate of 20%, and also subject to Climate Change Levy charges, I assume I would have been paying these, therefore am I able to claim back the cost of this paid in error?
As we didn't inform EDF that we'd moved into the property in 2011, is it my fault we are on the wrong tariff? We didn't think to worry as it's prepayment.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lee

In short, yes you can.
The company (EDF) should be sending you a VAT form, just fill it in and send it back to them showing you are not/have not been a business, this should then be adjusted to 5% and final bill should then be amended to show this.0 -
Ha, I think I may work for the same company based on your comment:rotfl:0
