Refund when overcharged?

I got my CC bill this morning and found a transaction for £1199 that I don't remember . Now I am a bit of a shopper and the date of the transaction is Wed 30th May, middle day of last school holidays when I was like as not near some shops with DS and only a couple of days after a trip to Bluewater. Not sure if most transactions go through on the same day or not nowdays.
I think the only likely expanation is that I was overcharged - some overworked busy shop assistant has rung up 1199 instead of 11.99 and I being mostly worried about sheilding my PIN and what on earth my 5 year old is touching now (you know the story don't you!) havn't really looked at the amount. (I know shoot me now Martin). Unfortunately I have no idea what this is for it shows on the statement as "JF Sales and Mark Sevenoaks" (which makes me think Bluewater) and the card issuer says its a "hardware store" but I can't find out more from them until the right dept is open Monday - customer services are sending me out the fraudulent payment form.
I am confident in the system to believe that I will get a full refund of this and any charges (already an overlimit as its crossing with last months payment in full pushed me over - its a low limit card that I do ALL my spending on - Tesco points!!). What I am concerned about is how long it will take to sort out - should I pay this amount in the meantime to clear my card. I have a shopping trip to New York booked in Mid August and I am returning on the Queen Mary - imagine the embarassment if I ran out of credit to pay my onboard bill!!
Does anyone have any idea of how long this might take to resolve?

Why haven't you got your credit card receipts - it's only a month ago?
Are there other transactions on the same day which would prove to you whereabouts you were that day?
With regard to timing, if it's just a mistake it should take next to no time to resolve - but once again, it would help if you had your shop receipt as well as your credit card receipt as then any error would be obvious. If it's fraudulent, they should put the transaction into dispute straight away but that won't necessarily mean you can spend money in August.0 -
I may well still have the receipt somewhere, in one of my many many handbags or even in the store bag. Trouble is I have no idea of the store in question.
Also if it was something I bought on the Bluewater trip the receipt may be lost, I spent £68 in Boots on that trip and it was triple points weekend - I had left my Advantage Card in another of my many many handbags and had every intention of claiming the points during the following week. By Monday it had gone - spirited away by a 5 year old playing some silly game no doubt. Still fuming about that one!The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0 -
Quick bit of detective work on Google shows this to be a marketing/advertising agency (http://www.ufindus.com/advertising_agency/sevenoaks).
Do you run your own business or use any services like this? Might be worthwhile giving them a ring to find out what the charge is for - 01474 8522270 -

They should isolate the said amount on ur statement as "disputed amount", which means that it IS on the statement, but that amount does not acrrue interest or be included in ur minimum paymnts, it should just be like it is not there while it is being orted out.Halifax CC [STRIKE]£1322.88[/STRIKE] £0 :j 11.9% Virgin CC [STRIKE]£1534.76[/STRIKE] £1384.76 0% until AUG 13. Thanks for that, unfortunatley I'm even more confused as I'm a teacher so use no such agencies or services. The CC company said it was a hardware store so maybe they have more businesses using the same billing. I will find out more on Monday when I can speak to someone more knowledgable than customer services! The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0 -
Whilst all of that is correct, it doesn't mean that it's added back to your available spending, and I doubt that it is. So it would stop you spending money on your card.youknowwho wrote: »They should isolate the said amount on ur statement as "disputed amount", which means that it IS on the statement, but that amount does not acrrue interest or be included in ur minimum paymnts, it should just be like it is not there while it is being orted out.0 -
Hi Kathryn,
usually disputed amounts aren't taken out of your OTB ( open to buy) until the credit card company receives your signed declaration form ( the one where you sign and acknowledge what the fraudulent/disputed transactions are).
In some cases it can take a couple of weeks.
You shouldn't be charged any fees or interest and most of the time this gets sorted without any problems. However, most credit card companies are large companies and mistakes are easily made. Make sure to keep an eye on your statements ( if you can, keep an eye on your online account) and be sure to query anything that seems abnormal.
Hope this was helpful

Thanks everyone for putting my mind at rest. In 20 years of being a credit card user this is only the second time I've had a problem (first was when my cheque for payment went astray at their end). Of course its just a short time before I go on my freebie holiday (Tesco points - mostly earned through this card - and some beef in gravy!). I have other cards but they are either my stooze pots and untouchable or my joint card with Mum so I don't want to confuse them. I am sure it will all be sorted out in due time, but I did have a huge panic when I opened the bill! The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0
