1TB portable hard drive

Options
Hi ya,

I want to buy an easy to use portable hard drive, to store music, magazines etc on it as well as general back up for my laptop.

Ideally I would like it to be a 1TB

What is a good value, I have been looking at a Samsung for £48.66 on Amazon.

Can I do better?

Thanks

Susanna

Hi Susanna. Samsung are an excellent make and that is a good price for 1TB. I would urge caution in chasing the lowest price when buying something as important as a data store because reliability is everything. Yes you may save a few pounds buying the bargain 'OkyKoky Special' but it's a false economy.

Not very MSE, but based on personal experience with several of these drives I much prefer the Western Digital 'My Passport' drives. Yes, a bit more expensive, but they're fast and reliable ...

Watch! Some of these drives have "on board hardware encryption" (well some of the Western Digital devices do!) they are a TOTAL PITA (In my humble opinion)!!

I've lost more data through the encryption not liking my machines and so fails to decrypt files than i have to accidentally pulling the USB cable while saving files! >_<

But that's just me! I ended up opening the external drive and ripping the USB connection and Encryption off the drive and using it as a bare drive. I got a normal USB caddy to stick it in!

    Now much happier!! =(^_^)=

I'm not sure what you are referring to by 'hardware encryption'. My Western Digital drives came supplied with software on the drive for encryption, data recovery tools etc. but all of these are user selectable.

The first thing I do is delete the lot to maximise useable space.

Keep an eye out for Ebuyer.com's daily deals. They often have high capacity drives at big savings.

Got myself a lovely little 2TB seagate desktop drive for £59 last week :)

The encryption is done on the small board that connects the USB socket to the Drive inside the enclosure. The software usually just talks to the encryption chip to pass / setup the password. Then the chip takes over and decrypts or encrypts files as they go over the usb.

I was having issues jumping between Linux and Windows (I'm not the usual user type the drive are aimed at ^_^ ) .
