I am trying to pay for as much as I can on my cash back CC to earn a few more pennies! Is is possible to pay for utilities (i.e. gas and electric bills) on a credit card? I don't pay utilities by DD as I cannot stand how they up your payment to way more than you would ordinarily use. I therefore receive a quarterly bill which I usually pay via online banking but thinking I may be missing out on a trick by not using my cash back card. Is this correct?
Thanks in advance : )

it will depend on the companys, some will accept credit cards, others wont.
check fi you can pay them via credit cards, if you can, then you can be earning cashback from them0 -
Ok, Thank you. My gas and electricity is through EDF. Just logged into my account and it seems I can make payment by credit card so think I will give it a go!0

Bear in mind that many companies give a discount for paying by DD, so a good example is gas & electricity.
Check whether he cashback benefit is more than the benefit of paying by DD.0 -

Oops sorry missed that.
I happen to agree.
It's very annoying. Had a poor experience recently with my electricity supplier.
Already asked them to recalculate once and will do so again once I have some readings since the Solar PV has been installed.
I have also wondered about just not paying by DD and paying quarterly.0 -
We set up a DD with EDF about a year ago as I was convinced by them that they would not put up the DD from the £80 per month which had been agreed on our previous 12 months useage. We use around £800- £850 pa (as we mainly rely on a woodburner for heating) so a £80 per month DD would more than cover this. Anyhow after 3 months they put the DD up to £108. No way were we using, or going to use, 40% more energy than we were currently using meaning that they would be sitting on the additional money, grrr! Frustrating as we miss out on the DD discount but I cannot stand the idea of them sitting on our money rather than it being in our account0

They cannot put up a DD without informing you, although it's possible they put it somewhere less prominent that you didn't see.0

Understandable at a emotional level but you should be able to work out which makes more sense financially, i.e. is the discount worth more than the interest you'd earn on the monthly £28 if you retain it?0 -

Thanks in advance : )They did notify us hence why I cancelled the DD.
This doesn't make any sense to me.
EDF do offer a good discount for paying monthly by DD (typically 6%) and they tell you what the amount is very clearly in advance (as you have found)
No matter how you pay, they will still want the amount they think fit (plus probably a bit more if you don't pay monthly by DD)
If you don't agree with the amount requested, EDF are very amenable to reviewing the amount on request, possibly with your justification. It only usually takes a phone call
At this time of year you probably shouldn't have any credit on a pay monthly tariff (we are in credit because I hate to be in debt and EDF reduced our monthly payments but we are probably switching in a couple of months when the fixed deal we are on will end anyway, so I never quibbled this time)
You won't get the best deal from EDF if you opt to pay quarterly on receipt of bill.
Consult an energy comparison site to find the best deal for you. I'm sure you can find a much better deal than the EDF pay on receipt of bill tariff you are now on.
