Hi,
Is there a way to connect an HDMI DVD player to an old TV?
Philips have offered to replace faulty DVD player with a new DVD player with blu-ray, but it needs HDMI.
(I put a link in a similar post and the whole post was deleted. Thanks MSE - you could just have deleted the link! I am dyslexic and it takes me ages to write stuff).
thanks

Looking at this page http://www.techturbo.co.uk/hdmi-to-scart/ it seems that it's quite a job to convert the digital HDMI signal into an analogue signal for your older TV, so a decent box is £40+. Might be worth mentioning that to Philips if it's part of a warranty claim.0

how old is the tv ?
and what connectors does it have available to it ?
you can get convertors, so you should be able to connect it., (althou they may not be cheap)
it just depends what convertor you actually need0 -
Did they say what model of blu-ray player? It may have component video output, and you can get a component to scart cable quite cheaply
HDMI to scart is expensive though0 -

You can get a composite to scart cheaply, not component to scart
SCART is simply a socket shape and not a video standard, it can carry composite, SVideo and RGB. You still need both ends to be able to send/ receive these formats for it to work.
Component from a DVD player etc is YPBPR which SCART never was able to deal with. You could get a component to RGB SCART transformer but it isnt going to be much cheaper than an HDMI one (though less chance of problems due to no handshake being required)0 -
Thanks guys,
They want to send me a Philips BDP2100/05.
I think the TV just has two scart slots.
Will my Virgin Media box not work as a converter? Or is that a dumb question?

Never seen a VM box but I'd be very surprised if it has a HDMI input.
There was a whole host of issues with HDMI and its copyright protection protocols when the standards were first agreed. I'm not in the market for new toys at the moment so havent been following developments as much but in theory any convertor from HDMI to anything other than DVI was in breach of the standard because it will strip the copy protection and therefore no "reputable" company would do it. Of cause doesnt stop lots of low cost players reverse engineering things and making it but you wouldnt find it elsewhere.0 -
Looks like that model only has HDMI out for video

Can't they get you a DVP3600/05 that's a regular DVD player with scart? You won't benefit from a bluray player at all (unless you sell it, then buy a regular DVD player and pocket the difference)0 -
So if a model has both an HDMI and a scart socket, it is ok for my TV? I found a few models that have both.
thanks
Yes, if the player has both sockets then the SCART will work with your TV.
Probably time to start thinking of upgrading your TV, though. It's only going to become even more difficult to connect additional equipment to it as time goes on..0 -

(LOL - I just deleted my question when i realised it was a stupid question, not knowing you answered it!)
OK thanks a lot.
You're right, I should upgrade my TV. That might be possible in the next year but not right now.ringo_24601 wrote: »Looks like that model only has HDMI out for video

Thanks, I did ask Philips for another model. They have now said Go back to Argos, so I will print my emails from Philips, and show them to Argos, because Argos referred me to Philips in the first place because the fault was an unusual one: (it plays films fine, but not TV series' - it only plays the first episode and ignores the rest! - Weird or what?!)
