Hate to be picky, but the old owner and the new owner have a responsibility on registering the car. Its in the old owners interests to let DVLA know its sold so they don't get fpn's for the new owners dodgy driving (CIP), and the new owner needs the log book updating for road tax, and insurance purposes (are you the registered keeper?). Haven't bought a car for over a year but I seem to recall that there is a tear off slip for the old owner to sign, and one for the new owner as well???

Hi, yes I am the registered keeper, when I bought the vehicle I signed the log book to say that I am the new owner, I then get given a tear off slip so that I can tax/Insure the vehicle until the new log book comes. The previous owner is supposed to send the old log book to the DVLA for them to update their records and the DVLA then send the new log book to me, I waited for this to happen and when I didn't receive the log book I contacted the DVLA who suggested that I complete a form applying for the log book as it did not look like the previous owner had bothered to send the old log book off.

Thread going the way I thought it would.

    ASK ON PEPIPOO

    Seriously.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

The new keeper keeps the green slip - and can use it to tax the car.
The old keeper has the legal responsibility to send the first page to DVLA. Both sign both pieces.

Probably, but of no relevance to the OP either way.
Not even clutching at straws here.
    Be happy...;)
