Cable from Ipad to TV ?

Options
HI,

MY OH has loads of movies on her Ipad, which she would like to watch via TV.

Is this possible using cable, and if so, what sort of cable would she need ?

If its not possible, then I guess we will have to get one of the little Apple TV boxes.

Thanks

    iPad HDMI adapter.
Very cheap if you have older iPad with 30-pin dock connector, quite expensive for new iPads with Lightning connector
  • Thank -you !

Ours is 30 pin, not the new lightning conn.

I did a bit of reading up on amazon reviews, and saw one that mentioned not compatible with Sony Bravia TVs ???

( we have a Sony Bravia, which is a few years old, 9 at least )

    The Apple cable is £35.

You might want to consider the AppleTV version 3 which is £99 (or less if you get a refurbished one) and offers wireless streaming and other clever functions.

deejaybee - we've been talking about an HDMI cable - doesn't your TV have an HDMI port? It may not at 9....
  • Hi almillar:

Yep TV has one HDMI port, which I currently use for DVD player, would just have to take out the existing hdmi cable at TV end when I wanted to connect Ipad to TV.

There is another interface next to the hdmi interface ( on TV ) and that is labelled " PC ".

Its a modern-looking flatscreen 32" TV, and I have a soft spot for it because I won it in a competition ( £600 worth then ) :D just after my old tv was zapped by a lightning bolt that hit chimney and travelled down aerial cable..

So will probably keep it till it dies ( only had to replace remote so far )

Just ordered one off Amazon @ £8.69. Good and bad feedback so will see if it works.
  • HDMI uses a different style of copyright protection than the old scart system etc which involves an electronic "handshake" and the different devices effectively introducing themselves and their capabilities (eg 3D or not). Unfortunately when you make something more advanced/complex you introduce more ways of things breaking/not working.

I havent heard of iPads not working with Sony Bravia TVs but its always possible. Certainly check before you buy.

AppleTV may be something to look at, this sits next to your TV also connected by HDMI but allows you to stream to it from your iPad, your computer running iTunes or play certain content off the internet. It can also "pull" from your iTunes library so you dont have to go to your computer to control whats showing, rewind etc.

The advantages are really that you dont have to have a cable running, which tends to be fairly short so you have to get up to pause etc. Given youll have to get up to switchover the device connected anyway then it probably doesnt justify itself

  • Thanks InsideInsurance !

Yep saw Apple TV in action at the in-laws recently..

Good little gadget, I think father-in-law had it sitting on TV shelf, wired into router, rather than wireless, as router was close by where all his TV gear etc was.

Our router is pretty far away from where TV etc is situated, so I presume would have to operate it wirelessly ( Have BT wireless broadband )

Don't really want to shell out nearly a One-er at the moment though.

It has built in wireless so thats not a problem. Mine (2nd gen) has only ever been used wirelessly without any issues. The newer 3rd gen does 1080p though where as mine is the lower resolution 720p
