Mouse curser jerky and slow

I have a year old Windows 7 PC with 8 gb ram. Suddenly the mouse movements are jerky and slower with mouse clicks delayed, needing 2 clicks to have any effect.
I looked in task manager and the only thing running at 95% was system idle.
Any idea what this could be ? I have scanned with Mailware bytes and nothing has flagged up.
Tried a system restore to an earlier point and it told me after the process that it had failed to restore, even though there was an earlier point.

What type of mouse is it?
If one of the old type "Ball" mice, which has moving parts inside (look underneath) there are a couple of small wheels and spindles which become clogged with dust and bits of fluff, which wrap around the spindles and slow it down.
If it's an Optical type, which has a light underneath and connects via USB, check the connection or try it in another USB port on your computer.
If you can borrow access to another computer, try it in that. If the same thing happens, the mouse is a dying rodent (sorry!) and should be replaced. They are quite cheap from stores such as Wilkinson, supermarkets, etc. My own optical mouse has lasted years, but I was always cleaning the old "Ball" mice I had.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Its a wireless usb mouse. The batteries are fine in it. When they run out it stops working altogether.0

I would try changing the batteries anyway to rule that out.0

I have also developed 'jerky cursor syndrome'. In my case it's jumping just up and down the screen at about 1cm in both directions. Trying to line up a click is like some simplistic1970s computer game! It returns to normal a few minutes after startup though. I'm on XP, using a USB ball mouse.0
