Hi, Just come home to find a company we use to sort our grass out has gone and done our garden and did lawn scarification (We didn't ask them to do this was just reccomeded by them before xmas) On top off that I believe this is way too early.
1. Did they do it too early??
2. If so what the damage done?
3. Reason they said grass not healthy is because when house was built they just put turf on rubble so grass don't have much room to grow so they said might want to add top soil.. can I do this now they done the lawn???
4. The grass is on a higher part of garden so have to walk up step to get to it.. should I top soil to the tip of the wall in front of the grass bout 2cm???
We got no trees surrounded and get sunlight all day if it sunny
Thanks for ur help

Ok scarification if done thoroughly, on an old lawn always looks horrific. It can be done in the autumn or spring, yes it's ok to add good quality top soil or compost to the grass this is only about a 1cm and is normally done by aerating the lawn first (Stick a garden fork about half it's depth every foot or so and giving it a wiggle before pulling it out, so you make finger wide holes) and then using a broom you sweep the top soil over the lawn so that it falls down the holes and feeds the roots. In a couple of weeks of warm weather it will all spruce up. Grass in a sunny position is very resilient and just needs good watering and feeding in dry weather.
As we have had a mild winter so far, what they did to your lawn is fine, you would not do it in frosty / snowy weather as you damage the roots, which is why you do scarification in mild wet weather not hot summers or freezing weather. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
Last year a very well known lawn company did scarification on my lawn at the end of January in between 2 heavy snow falls. The resulting plowed field effects were very sad to look at until spring when I reseeded. Never again!0
