Windows firewall?

I've bought a new computer using windows 8.1. I'm getting used to all the new things. It has come pre installed with McAfee. When I check the firewall status, at the top it says: These settings are being managed by vendor application McAfee Personal Firewall.
then down the list under Domain Profile, Private Profile is active and Public Profile, it says Windows Firewall is on.


I'm guessing that my firewall is Windows Firewall, but why does it say Mcafee is managing it?


And is Windows Firewall the best to use?

It does, although it's re-branded as Windows Defender in Windows 8.

However I suspect McAfee pay laptop makers to install trial versions, in the hope that they can entice users to go for a paid upgrade, even though Windows Defender is free and built-in.

I would uninstall McAfee and either use Windows Defender or one of the other free products (probably more secure than Defender) like AVG, Avast etc.
