I sold an item on ebay , sent it , about 2 weeks later the buyer contacts me to say they haven't received it , we wait a few more days then I refund the buyer .
I got a form and sent it off for compensation from Royal Mail , about 2 weeks later they send me a cheque and a letter saying they can't find the item .
about a week later the item comes back thru my letterbox . !
on it the buyer's address had been crossed out and the little sticker which indicates the problem had the box "not called for" ticked , anyone know what that means ?
so what do I do ?

"not called for" means one of two things.
It could be that a card was left at the buyers house to tell them that their package was at the post office or delivery office due to a failed delivery attempt and that they need to pick it up or arrange another delivery and they failed to do this.
Alternatively, it's possible that a card wasn't left so the buyer had no idea that the package was waiting for them. This does happen occasionally.
How much did you get from RM for the item?
If it was only a few £s then I wouldn't worry too much about it as contacting RM to tell them what happened and arranging to pay the money back would probably cost them more that the item is worth.
If however it is something with a reasonable value, you should contact RM and ask them how to proceed.0 -
What I don't get is - why didn't the dept. that looks for missing mail simply contact the local sorting office and ask them if they had it ?
the item's value is under a tenner , they compensated me exactly the amount I sold it for plus postage .

Its probably cheaper and easier to just to compensate when it is that low. The cost of investigating lost letters and parcels is probably far more expensive to check all the links of chain.0 -
resell the item as a charity auction.
