Double Glazing.

Hi
I'm also after a bit of advice on replacement double glazing. I've been given a quote of £1468 from a local company to replace original crittal windows with UPVC. They say they don't use scaffolding and seal from the inside..is this a good way to do it? Any down sides to this? This price is also for 4 windows - 2 large (with 3 panels) and 2 small windows for kitchen and bathroom - is this a good price?
Any advice on this greatly appreciated! They said they have done a couple of the other flats in this block too so I'm inclined to try and speak to them, but from first glance they look okay...
Sounds good to me, assuming the old windows are single glazed and if your doing any other work make sure you claim the home improvement fund for the upgrade to double glazing you can get upto £1600"talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -

Pretty good price.
Go speak to the others that had windows done, see if they are still happy with them.
How's about getting another 2 or 3 quotes?
And the windows although fitted from inside still need to be silicone or made weatherproof from the outside.63 mortgage payments to go.

Yes they are single glazed and I am refurbing the kithen and bathroom and flooring etc as well so will definitely look into the home improvement fund - thank you! Do you know where I can find out about this?captainhindsight wrote: »Sounds good to me, assuming the old windows are single glazed and if your doing any other work make sure you claim the home improvement fund for the upgrade to double glazing you can get upto £16000 -
Thanks - this was my concern about weather proofing from the outside so will ask them. I've had other quotes from other companies but they all use scaffold which as I'm on the 4th floor is a costly exercise..Pretty good price.

There is another thread about it here and some more info from DECC here and here
Its definitely worth taking advantage of because it is essentially getting money back for what you were going to do anyway, you just have to jump through the right hoops to get there."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
Thanks so much! Look after the pennies and all that!

Sorry..one more questionThanks so much! Look after the pennies and all that!
What about if you only qualify for one of these? Do you HAVE to meet 2 of these criteria? I am in a block of flats where the central heating and hot water is managed centrally and I ave no gas to the flat...so my options are limited on what I can pick form this list eg. double glazing from single glazed0 -

Yes you do need two off this list, if you cant install two of those off the list you wont qualify for the home improvement fund.
But if you act quickly you can claim the Green Deal Cash Back this will pay you £20 per square meter of double glazing you fit up to £650.
This does not require getting any type of green deal loan etc, you just need a Green Deal Assessment and then get an improved installer to do the work.
This incentive is not as good as the home improvement fund because you cant claim for the assessment but its still something that you can claim to save some £££s"talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -

We had our windows replaced by a local installer - 2 years agp - that's 12 windows and a front door for £5200 which was about 1/4 of the price quoted by Everest - the sealed units are argon filled (not that that makes any difference) and came with a 10 year warranty - our installers are known locally as a good choice and have been installing locally for 30 years +
So I would say - check on the company - have you been recommended them by anyone ?
Plus what warranty do they offer ?
Is it insurance backed > should the company dissolve you will be covered - that said, most companies buy in the frames and sealed units from elsewhere - so are much of a muchness ..
Our windows were fitted from the inside as well - they sealed up around them properly - so that appears pretty standard nowadays....0 -
Not unusual for double glazing flats to do all from inside . You can always reach out to clean and seal . I always put a seal under cills and onto the plaster as I draw the frames in so its triple sealed . Price is impossible to say but around £300 per frame but not enough info about frame, glass, sizes, finish, make up etc . They need to ensure the area below is safeHi
