Sash window draft proofing

Options
Hi,

Im looking to get my original single glazed sash and casement windows professionally draft proofed, Ive had one company out but was a bit surprised by the price quoted.

The sash windows are in very good conditions and require no woodwork repairs, they currently open correctly with the cords and weights having been renewed recently. I have 5 sash windows to draft proof in total of varying sizes.

I also have 3 single glazed casement windows that have a total of 6 openers which require easing to close correctly and then draft proofing.

I have received a quote of £1180 for this work from a Sash window restoration company. That is to professionally fit draft proofing to these windows by routering in draft strips around the edges of the sashes and then replacing the staff and parting beads of the sashes with draft proofed beads.

The casement window openers will be eased to open and close correctly with draft proofing routered around the edges. One of these openers will have the glass replaced.

Its alot more than I was expecting or was I being naive?

Cheers

  • what area are you in? as there are not many sash people around it may be worth trying to find a small local guy that does it rather than a big company, as they do charge a lot due to lack of competition

Based upon quotes I am currently receiving for a similar job, I would say that sounds about right. They have to take out the sashes and do a lot of carpentry, and as far as I know it takes 2 days work for 5 windows (I have 5 windows, mine are in good condition but need new sash cords and draught proofing). Definitely go for a local firm if you can find one.

The quote is a fair quote and not overly expensive at all. I would charge more than that in all honesty.

You may be able to get a lower quote by getting a sole trader rather than a company to do the work but even so I don't think you will save that much on the qoute.
