Declined for RBS card

This isn't a typical "wah, why have I been declined" thread.

My credit history isn't the best, recently it's improved but it's still a long way from being perfect. Used the eligibilty checker and there was a 50% chance of getting accepted for an RBS Platinum card - 0% on balance transfers for 15 months not to be sniffed at when I've got £2,300ish of credit card debt at 24.95%!

My application was declined - c'est la vie. However, I've received a letter from RBS today telling me unfortunately I didn't meet the score necessary to approve an application.

Can I write back to them asking them for more detail as to why I was rejected? It's implied that they credit searched Equifax and Experian - however when I checked my credit files recently, Equifax had absolutely nothing on me bar being on the electoral roll. I'm curious as to whether Equifax's complete lack of information on me might be affecting my chances of getting credit, so can I ask RBS for a more detailed breakdown of why I was rejected, or am I just !!!!ing in the wind with this?

  • No they will not tell you - if you knew why you failed would it not be tempting to 'adjust' your next application ?
  • Yeah fair enough when you put it that way it makes sense that they wouldn't tell me.
