confused -number plate retention

Hi , im in the process of buying a new car .My present car has a private plate on it .I have sent off the retention forms to the dvla .I need to put it on retention because the new car isn't ready till mid april . Today my new v5c arrived for the original registration number on my present car .
Now this is where my confusion starts .My new car dealer said they would supply my present car with new number plates for the original registration FOC .I phoned them up earlier and they said they won't make my new plates until a certificate arrives ( not sure what this is called ) but I know have the new v5c but they say no new plates until this piece of paper comes to me . Is this correct ? as surely I have a v5c with proof of ownership .
Hopefully someone will understand the above as im starting to confuse myself !
Thanks

the form that they are asking for is the V750 certificate of entitlement

you will get one of these for the number that you are putting on retention as it wont be assigned to a vehicle so you will have the V750 certificate of entitlement

    https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/getting-number-plates-made-up

have a look at that website and it will tell you that the V5c is one of the things that can be used to get plates made up
You must bring one of the following to show you’re allowed to display the registration number:

vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI)
new keeper supplement (V5C/2 or V5C/2NI)
certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI) to the number
retention document (V778) (not applicable in Northern Ireland)
a renewal reminder for a tax disc or SORN (V11 or V11NI)
temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
a number plate authorisation certificate (V948) with an official stamp from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) or Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA)
a letter of authorisation from a fleet operator (including lease or hire company) quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate

I would say the all you need is drivers licence and the V5c

You have a V5C that shows that you own the plate - but it also shows it as being on another vehicle...

They need the V750 not only to make up the plates, but so that they can actually transfer the private plate onto the new car.

the way that i read the original post is

the car that has the cherished number is being sold so the retention document V778 has been filled in to retain cherished number

dvla have taken the cherished number off the car and it is now on retention and a certificate of entitlement will be issued in due time

the car will then assume its old registration number and the V5c has been issued showing the details of the original number

the op wants plates made up so the car can assume it original identity and has a V5c showing this registration mark, he will not get a certificate of entitlement for this number

I'm a Money-Saving-Aberdonian-Scottish person - I kept the original numbers to go back on when I sell the car. :p

99% of the time DVLA 're-issue' the original number - but lots of folks ditch their old plates not knowing that the car will likely eventually revert to it's original plate.

I have always done this as well, but last year the dealer did the cherished transfer so the car came out of the dealers with my cherished number on it and the dealer had scrapped the plates that they took off the car, so in two years time i will have the same problem

All sorted now. I just went to the local car spares shop who make up number plates with my V5c and drivers licence .Not sure why the dealer wouldn't do them but done now .Original plates back on the car .
I to will have to do the same again in years to come as new car will hopefully be supplied with personal plate again.
