Leaving before being made redundant?

We were advised at work around 6 weeks ago that we were entering into a review period regarding redundancies.
We were advised that no formal redundancy consultation had been entered but that the company were reviewing it's operation and that redundancies would be inevitable at the end of it. We were advised to seek other employment and that at any point within the next 3 months they could inform us that we were entering a formal redundancy notice period.
What I want to know is, if I find other employment and then hand my notice in what happens if they then announce redundancies? I presume I won't be eligable and will lose out on any redundancy pay?
I imagine that it has been done this way in the hope that people will leave rather than wait and therefore they won't need to make as much of a pay out?? But most people aren't even looking so its unlikely that anyone will leave!

Until the review period is complete and you are formally told that your role is being made redundant then you're entitled to nothing.
Once you're told you're being made redundant and given a redundancy date you may then be able to negotiate leaving early if you have a job offer but that's completely at your employers discretion.0 -
Thank you I thought that would be the case. A few of us have been for interviews and I am hoping that something comes of it so fingers crossed I will be handing my notice in soon, but I know as soon as I do that the redundancies will go ahead. But it's better to have new employment than to wait for redundancy and then not be able to find work I suppose.0

Even then, there is no guarantee the Op will be able to quickly find work...0 -
I would only get a couple of weeks wages and a 28 day notice period. It's not worth waiting for. It would come in very handy at the minute as a lump sum but it wouldn't last very long and I would then only have 6 weeks in which to find a new job.0
