Issues cancelling my sky subscription

I wrote to sky 2/3 weeks ago informing them I wished to cancel my subscription as I was moving over to virgin media. I received a letter on Friday asking me to contact them regarding missing security information so they could complete my cancellation. I put all of my details on the original letter so couldn't understand what could be missing.
I spoke to an advisor on their 08442 number who said that as of today my 31 day notice period begins. Surely this can't be right? They had my details and imo this seems like a low level stalling tactic from sky to keep me paying them. The only 'security' info they asked me was for my password so they could speak to me.
Has anyone else had issues like this? Is it worth fighting them to get them to at least backdate the notice period to when my letter arrived with them?

I would stick with your guns and state your initial letter was your cancellation and the period starts from then. Follow their complaints procedure if needed.
