painting textured wallpaper

We're wanting to decorate our hallway to brighten it up a bit.
At the moment, it is textured wallpaper that seems to have been painted with a slightly glossy paint.
Can I just paint on top of this with matt paint? Will it adhere to the gloss? Do I need an undercoat of some sort?
We're not prepared to strip the paper off, we're in a rented house at the moment and we've no idea what state the plaster will be in.
Thanks for any help and advice you may have

As you are in a rented place, have you got permission to paint at all? I don't think painting on top would work well though I see why you can't strip it.0 -

If the current paint is silk emulsion - which has a shine to it - there's no reason not to paint with matt emulsion.0 -
Unfortunately Matt paint painted on top of silk sometimes has problems adhering, and as such can develop fine hairline cracks all over the surface of the paint. This is called crazing. It doesn't always happen, but it often does. When we moved into our house the entire house had been painted over silk with matt, and there was crazing in every room. I think, but not sure, it can be solved by painting first with one of these basecoats that cover imperfections, or you could take the chance that it will be ok, but just to warn you!

This is the best picture I can find of what happens, and it's not that great sorry (3rd picture down):

This doesn't happen straight away as you paint, but over the following hours/days it develops, because the matt paint cannot grip onto the shiny surface of the silk.M.A.C.A.W member number 39
