Do I complain?

I just bought 5 mini handbag six spray toothpastes from a seller on ebay, 100% feedback so thought be ok. They have just arrived and all 5 of them had a line through the bottom covering up the best before date so me being me and not liking things out of date just rubbed one away and the date comes up as best before 09/08!!

No way will I use these almost 6 years out of date, sprayed one tiny bit onto my hand and smell very strange. So do I complain or would I not be able to complain as nowhere on listing does it mention best before date, just says brand new not used. But surely someone shouldn't be selling something 6 years out of date and not declaring it?

  • You need to be telling the seller this. Whilst it isn't in the listing, I think it fair to assume you wouldn't buy something 6 years out of date.
  • Just sent a message to ask if they are aware of this. I think they are as they have black markered out the date on the bottom of all the bottles but me being me rubbed one of them out as hate out of date products.
  • See what they say.

    "Do I complain?"

    Er.... YES!!

6 years out of date for products for oral use - that's quite bad, no?!

Especially if they haven't specified that the products are (VERY) out of date, in the listing.

.. And they've also clearly attempted to obscure the dates on the products...

Complain by Ebay message to seller and also leave factual neg, possibly also complaint to Ebay I would think!

  • Hmm just had a reply back from the seller saying that she is selling on behalf of a friend who owns the toothpaste company and that the best before date was put on by accident as there shouldn't be one as there is no best before date as they don't have one ever

It could be true. It just takes one wrong digit inserted to a computer and best before 2018 becomes 2008. It might explain why they are trying to overload them on Ebay.

Open a not as described case though. Regardless of whether it is true or not they should state this in the listing so people can make their own mind up.

  • Link to the item in question?

Also, is the 'line' a machine printed line or one done with marker pen or similar?
If it's a machine printed line, then I'd tend to believe the seller, and TBQH I think they're mostly in the right. Permanent marker is another story.....
Not sure I've ever seen a best before date on toothpaste- Are you sure it's not a batch code or something? Piccies or link and we can give you a much better opinion :)
