I had 1gb of Samsung RAM in my old Thinkpad. Have just been given 1.5gb or Kingston RAM, so have replaced one of the Samsung 512mb sticks with the 1gb one. Should I just leave the other Samsung 512mb stick in there or replace it with the Kingston one or does it not really matter?

Ta.

    Thanks.

Am I right in thinking I should set the virtual ram setting to 3072mb if I have 1.5gb RAM?

I would go for Blackface, as its one of the more numerous types.

    ?

I am not looking at buying more RAM, just asking which is the better of the ones that I have to use.

do you only have 2 slots available ?
if not, you could just use all 4 together.

if you only have the 2 slots, then i would use the 2 kingston. As the kingston and samsung could be slightly different types, ie, different speeds or something.
If the kingston is faster, then it'll be run at the slower speed to match the samsung, there may also be compatibility issues between the kingston and samsung.

but in practice, it really wont make much difference at all.

as you already have the ram, you might as well match them, but it wouldn't have been worth buying more to match them

Better both could well be made in the same factory or bought in from another maker .

Only have two slots, it is an old Thinkpad x31.

I haven't got a clue how much faster the two kingston ones would be rather than using the kingston with the samsung, I suppose it would only be fractions of a second? Not sure where I would look to check the speed as I am a bit of a pc novice. :o
  • If they are different speeds then they will work at the speed of the slowest , speccy from piriform will tell you what speeds the ones which are currently installed http://www.piriform.com/speccy (get the free one)

if there is a difference, we are talking a small amount, something you will most likly not notice.

but as already have the Ram, it seems silly not to match them, and on the off chance there is a difference, you will get a benefit, otherwise it'll be the same. You wouldn't be worse off for doing it, but there is a slim chance it will be better (even if its not noticeable)
