My daughter's laptop has conked out and I am looking to buy a tablet to replace it. Is this something that is feasible given that she is used to the Windows op system?
I have zero experience of tablets and do not know know if you can get Windows versions of them. Are they like laptops but with the physical keyboard replaced by a touchscreen version?

  • Was she running windows 8 on her laptop? If so then a move to a windows based tablet might be quite easy.

Have a look something like Asus t100TA, Acer P3-171

Edit - Why it has to be tablet? Is it ok to get touchscreen laptop?

The asus t100 mentioned above is the best of both worlds. If you're not bothered about a keyboard the toshiba encore is £200 at ebuyer and PC world - can always connect a proper usb/bluetooth keyboard.

I had the asus t100 for xmas and got rid after a week, whilst the tablet itself was great, screen ok and battery life excellent (10 hours easily), the keyboard it came with was gash, and trackpad even worse. It would go to sleep if you start typing requiring you to move it for a few seconds before the cursor would move, its also tiny.

The tablet isn't that good value either, you're basically paying £100 for the keyboard attachment, which is pretty much what the touch type 2 keyboard costs on my surface pro which replaced it (and was cheaper too), probably the nicest keyboard I've ever used.

For the same price as the asus t100 you can get a surface and a keyboard attachment - its probably what I would do.

Does she want a tablet herself? If she uses it for doing work I personally wouldn't want to do on a tablet.

I've got that Toshiba (cost me £225 mind) and find it excellent. Unbelievable that it's a whole proper computer in there! Screen is great, battery life is excellent, build quality is, well, let's just say if you're taking it outside the house or you drop it, expect marks. I'm very careful with my stuff, and it has a couple of chips on the body and tiny little marks on the screen. I've got a Nexus 10 too, and with the same treatment it's spotless. Just get over the plasticky-ness and you'll be fine.

Yes exactly that - although you can get physical keyboards for some tablets. There are some nifty cases that have keyboards built in.

I guess laptops and tablets have very similar capabilities/uses for many people.

A tablet is great for 'consuming' information - web browsing, apps, iplayer, netflix, reading newspapers etc
However, in my opinion, its behind a laptop in terms of usability if you have to regularly 'create' things on it.

I don't know how old your daughter is but my children are high school age and do plenty of school work on their lap tops. I think they would find creating their documents slightly harder if they just had a tablet.
We have two tablets in the house but they are effectively recreational tools.

Just my opinion of course but I hope this helps you decide whats right for you and yours.

Here's a rundown of Windows 8 tablets for you to check out, although there are probably more available.

As others have said, it really depends what she will use it for, as to whether to go for a tablet or laptop.

Just had a shot of the Surface RT a few days ago, and must admit I really liked it. Won't be buying one, as I don't need one, but am seriously considering going for a Windows phone, as my android is playing up, and I rather like the Windows set up.

You may also want to consider a small laptop, just giving you a rough idea here at PC World.

I'm thinking tablet purely because I have seen that on average they are cheaper than laptops. My daughter is at high school and she is ok with touchscreen technology so I can go either way.
Btw thanks for everyone who replied, I will be investigating all the suggestions given.
