Monday 24th February - what small DFW things will you be doing today?

When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending...

Best of luck holding onto those pennies today ;)

    • Good morning! I do hope I haven't crossed with some of the usual early risers and started a duplicate thread..its the kind of time it often pops up, and I was keen to post before I started work.

Hello to all regulars, newbies, and lurkers - I have only just realised how 'read' these threads get. All those views can't just be me going back in to try to remember what I was meant to be doing today! Best of luck to Ziggy in not doing very much apart from healing today!

    My list

    • cycle to work (just need to pick my time amongst the rain showers). This is my first cycle commute since about a month before I had surgery, for a variety of reasons it's just not been possible. Trying to ease in gently! DONE. I am very proud!
    • get DD's bedroom ready for her return - we rent my room out, so I use hers when not here, then have a mad dash trying to make it feel like its her usual clutter in it when she comes home!! DONE. I got away with a tidy too!
    • sort out ebay items collection. Sold a couple for pennies but better than cluttering my house up!
    • Pay for our hostel accommodation on last night of hols and email friend with payback details
    • Get bedding ironed ready for steady stream of guests coming this week
    • BLD from stores - dinner is left overs, nice and easy!
    • Hoover throughout
    • Clean bathroom and kitchen using minimal products
    • Update ebay listings that I threw on in a hurry last night to take advantage of free listing with better photos
    • Try to hold my nerve at work - negotiations about my jobs future start today. Frankly I am scared. No buffer here if it goes wrong. I think holding my nerve might have to stay on my list for a while!
    • Finish a couple of work tasks that are hanging over me
    • Put in request for overtime worked in January (worked it, but couldn't claim it before I got ill..now need to unravel admin to do so in retrospect!) Started this, just got to do last bit of admin tomorrow.
    • Do expenses at work As I cycled, I didn't take wallet, duh. Pippi - I am getting as slow at this as you! (Yes, I am lurker and love hearing your tales from up North).
    • DD going to a different (and more conveniently timed) running session tonight - her choice, I thought well worth a try! I can't work out the payment terms, but I think it either saves me 50p or costs me an extra 50p (if you have to pay for spectators or not), but saves me temptation of the cafe as that will be shut. We are off D'reckly!
    • Send thank you note to friend with update about life in crazy towers!
    • postcode lottery DONE, swagbucks (aim to get total to 560 by end of day).
    Good luck everybody.
  • Morning all, thanks for starting us off Crazy-lady, hope you enjoy your cycle in, much easier to keep up with something you are enjoying ;)

    I have already
    • Checked my online banking - so much better than normal by this stage in the month :D
    • Checked the weather - should be able to get some stuff on the line today :T

So my list for the rest of today
    • Wash all bedding (hopefully dry on the line)
    • Tidy up after the weekend
    • Bump all stuff on facebay and try to list another 5 items
    • 3 school runs done on foot
    • Make Pizza for tea tonight (and Wednesday tea) as per meal plan
    • Turn things off when not in use
    • Free postcode lottery
    • Go for a run this evening (free exercise)

Have a fan Monday all x

  • I am being paid £25 to cycle to work today!!!!

Just kidding. But I did find said amount in the pocket of my running trousers when I put them on! Not worn since I started to be ill near Christmas - so who knows what I was doing with so much cash on a run before then! But not complaining :j Planning to keep the fiver for top up milk for guests this week, and take the £20 to PAY INTO the bank on Weds. I don't remember the last time I paid physical cash into the account!!!!! Pre LBM I would have pocketed and frittered, but now I know exactly which card debt that is heading for! :)

    Good morning all,

Totally out of the swing of daily posts, really need to manage my time better. Feeling quite low at the moment, between illness, sleepless nights & a job I hate, feel totally out if my depth and now feel is actually causing me panic attacks, I just can't lift my mood at all.

On the plus side, it's almost pay day for hubby & I and like last month I intend on paying an amount off my credit card straight away, that felt great last month & we have managed to survive the remainder of the month bills included within the black. :j

    Today's list :

    Check banking
Bump items on local Facebook selling page
Set up a Facebook page for my new venture
    No diesel day
    No spend day
Change beds & get washing on line
    Tackle ironing
    No heating on until afternoon
    Do some surveys
Source a few items for ebay.
Withdraw cash from PayPal and pay off credit card debt.
    Update signatures amounts.

Have a great day everyone. :)

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi All

Thanks to Crazylady for starting us off. Im sorry to hear that work sounds like its not very certain, it is very unsettling to feel that way isnt it. Chin up.

Hi to Ikesmummy & Pippi *waving*

    Settlingin -
I couldnt read how you are feeling & not post. I know exactly what you are talking about. I dont know the cause of your feelings but for my own part they are caused by an extreemly unsettled situation that prays on my mind night & day. I often ping awake at 6am & the issues start to revolve around my head before I've even got up for a wee or had a hot drink. It is horrible sometimes. I really feel for you. Are you getting much support?

So me today. Well in the situation with the broken down car, I have had 2 boosts.
    1) a good friend has lent us his car for week day use as he works away & his wife cant drive. It is an amazing life line. I ended up walking for about 3 hours per day Weds-Friday last week, carrying heavy luggage, & although one of my favourite things in life is walks, its not the same thing at all. I can only say how glad I was it was half term & I didnt have to contend with getting my son to school.
    2) I have been in touch with a reputible company who buy cars that cant be used any more. They've offered me £150 via BACS & will collect tommorow. I am so relieved. I have also taken the action of asking my husband to print out a car tax refund form today. We only had a 6month disk, but that was renewed for Jan 1, so we ought to get something back which all helps.

Other stuff for today. I returned some library books & weekend DVDs. I have made sure I have funds in my account to pay my bills tommorow. Half term being over is better news for my business too, last week was absolutely dire.
We are very low on essentials at home, so will need to wait till husband gets paid tommorow to stock up. Need to think of a simple tea we can all eat tonight that wont ruin if I cook it for 4pm for sons dinner slot then keep it for us. Maybe sheappards pie?

    Love to all!

    Bob

    Morning Monday People,
A few small positive money-saving things today:
*Energy saving things: Hot kettle water in flask for my next drink, laundry done overnight on Economy 7 & washer re-loaded for more of the same tonight, trying to get it dry (or at least drier) out on the line to save some elec on heated airer use.
*Did rubber ham. From the £2-50 ham hock I cooked in the slow cooker for dinner yesterday, I'll also get a pizza topping, some pasta & a packed lunch. Bones back in slow cooker for stock, yesterday's cooking liquid from the ham frozen as jelly stock to use in lentil soups, etc.
*Quick scoot round the fridge to round up anything ready for using.
    *Did a couple of surveys.
    *Posted ebay parcel.
*Logged onto bank accounts & transferred funds.
*Loaf of bread baking nicely in bread machine.
*Made tomorrow's packed lunch & work snacks.
*Took loads of stuff down to add to compost bins......I get quite obsessive about compost. I reckon it cuts what we'd have to spend on the bagged stuff by half & I love that we're keeping stuff out of landfill & making something so useful from it.
*Carry on knitting project for the present box. Had to pull 4 rows out last night (Grrrr....) as 2 big glasses of wine & knitting are not always the best combination for me!
Have a film to watch this afternoon & it's leisure time but it's also money-saving. It's our last DVD from Lovefilm. We've cancelled our subscription for this year as we felt the £7.99 a month would be better in our urgent new bathroom fund. Lovefilm have honoured the fact that we'd paid up to the end of Feb by sending us a final DVD (I didn't think they'd bother as we'd cancelled) but have said that if it isn't returned in time, we will be charged for a further month.
Right.....think the latest shower has stopped, so will go & peg the washing back out.
    Have a good Monday everyone.

2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
    2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

SettingIn - Sorry to hear you think you may be starting with panic attacks. I've suffered with those in the past. Took a while to diagnose/come to terms with as I'm naturally quite a loud, confident person & I couldn't believe it was happening to me (& either could anyone else!) However, they evolved out of a period of stress I just couldn't seem to get on top of. I'd handle the whole thing differently now, so am saying to you that you need to be very kind to yourself, remind yourself that you are a person in your own right & not defined solely by your work, & tell yourself firmly when you are feeling the jitters coming on that this is a natural bodily response to stress & it will pass. Sometimes when work is bad, I think it can help to make a conscious decision to do your job as well as you can, but to remember that it is something you do for the pay, so focus on that & make sure you have lots of nice things to do at home. These don't have to involve spending money. If you make a list of everything you most like doing, I bet there'll be loads of things on it that don't actually cost anything at all, that's what I always find. Overall, it's pretty normal for people (esp us women with our complicated hormones!) to have ups & downs in moods. Sometimes, just accepting this can help moods become more even. Most importantly, <wagging finger> don't beat yourself up!! I used to be the world's worst for this. It doesn't help & it almost certainly adds to the insomnia. I don't mean this to sound like a nag.....it's just I'm a bit older than you, have been in that space where reaction to stress allows panic attacks to take hold, & I would handle it so differently these days xx

Hi all, I am joining the not very good club as well!
    Just been reading the posts.

Spent most of the morning in the dentist after having tooth ache at the week end.
I did not get my usual dentist as he was busy. The poor young girl I had was so put through it with not being able to decide and asking what I wanted to do.
    Very emotional being PMT. (Me)
AN ex ray was taken. The decision was finally made that the back tooth must come out.
I was given several injections in the gum
Well! the gum went to sleep the the tooth did not. a tooth with a crown on too!. More injections given and I started to cry. Every time the poor girl went to grab the tooth with the silver colour pliers I jumped a bit more with the pain.
In the end I just said I had had enough! and wanted to wait till my own dentist was free. She filled out a form for some pills to easy any infection.
I will have to go back Wednesday lunchtime to see my usual dentist.

i was dropped off at the dentist by car and then decided to walk the half hour to home instead of catching the little bus. I thought I could do with some air.

Hugs to those who need them.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)
