HP Pavilion g6 Notebook

Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong with a HP Pavilion g6 Notebook which takes five minutes to load the log in screen and at least a further forty minutes to load the desktop but you cannot select anything although the cursor does move?

Without the battery in the screen is black, the wifi button is illuminated and the fan is going.

Don't know how to put it into safe mode or how to back up and reinstall. Surprisingly I don't own this laptop. :eek:

At the moment I am trying these suggestions.

I tried the "Start-Up Test" and it states "Hard Disk Short DST: FAILED".

It has given me a "Failure ID" and a "Product ID".
