problems connecting laptop to tv via hdmi

Options
Hi, im having trouble connecting my laptop and tv via HDMI.

The laptop is running vista home premium and has 1 hdmi port, the tv has four hdmi ports.

The thing is it connected first and played fine, i configured the sound and that was working through the tv speakers.

But the laptop lost charge and shut off and when i rebooted and tried it again it just wont work?! I go into control panel, appearence and personalization, screen resolution. I select the 2nd screen and then tick "Extend the desktop onto this monitor" and hit apply. It then flickers and the windows background comes onto the tv but i cant see my short cuts/task bar etc etc just a blank screen.

Also when i connect the hdmi to the laptop and tv the laptop starts to flicker on and off, almost like the resolution is too high. But i tried to lower the resolution on the laptop screen but i still get this problem.

When it first worked there asnt any flickering on the laptop.

Anybody know what the problem might be please?

Extend gives you an extra desktop in the layout as shown in the screen resolution page, you should be able to move the cursor over to it.

Mirror will give you an exact duplicate of your desktop.

    Thanks

I just want to watch what is on the laptop (sky go) on the tv screen, so im guessing mirror is what i need then? But i dont remember seeing an option for mirror in the settings (im not in front of laptop now ill have to check tomorrow)

Wouldn't it be easier to just change the input on the TV , usually with a button on the remote labelled 'INPUT' or 'SOURCE'? , that's what I do with a connected PC.
