I would wait until I had the contract. And then if it says that it is dependent on good references etc I'd wait until the references were in.

Wait for the contract. I remember once starting a new job and getting told my second week in that they'd yet to receive my references and if I didn't produce two they would have to terminate my contract.

Even a contract is not prof the job is yours till the day you start but never resign on the basis of an email

    Get a hard copy first.

  • I'm of a different opinion on this one, so thought would just say mine.

I would resign on the basis of an email - that is contract enough anyway to show an offer has been made.

It's a moot point though - notice period in the first month is instant anyway from either side.

I'd still want to read the contract and be sure that it was not conditional on references etc. When I've been offered by email, the contract is also sent by email and that was then good enough for me.
  • thanks for the replys think from the above i will wait then, say i get the contract tuesdaay this week and hand my notice in tuesday at my current employment, by my contrct i have to give 1 week notice, so would i be right in thinking i would work rest of this week, then mondy the followin week which would men i can start new job on the tuesday ?
  • just to add on the interview he never asked for references and been no mention of them in eamils sent to me its a big manufctuing company
  • Notice starts on the day after it is given, so if you give in notice Tuesday, week notice starts Wednesday, ends following Tuesday. Your new start date would be the Wednesday after.

    Good luck!!

  • Is is normal practice of a company to offer someone a job once they have been prompted from the candidate?

Why not? The candidate waited for a response to the interview and hadn't heard so wrote to ask. By coincidence they were about to tell him, or his email has spurred them to act. Either way he got the job.
