But I think you are wasting your time on mere facts. They are much happier feeling hard done by than getting down to living well within their means and saving for the future.

I have certainly got on with it.

I suppose my point in this discussion is:

As great as it is TVs have got cheaper, but I would rather have affordable housing than affordable TVs. (you can replace TVs with just about any gadget).

    Is self-building still popular?
I used to know a few people that did it and lived in a caravan during the build, I even knew one couple who lived in a tent for the duration.

I haven't heard of it for a while
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Here's a crazy idea. As just about everything is cheaper and disposable income is higher than the 70's why not save some of that money, spend less on tat and buy a house.

To a point a do agree and that is exactly what I did.

The thing is all the slightly cheaper small things don't clear the gap of the massive increase is housing costs.

The things what bother me is the answer is always don't get a mobile phone/TV/tablet etc.

But this is coming from people who hard all the equivalent gadgets of the time Phone line/colour TV/BBC micro.

I am not doing to turn around in 20 years time ans say to the young you shouyld pay 2 times more for a house in in relative terms because my 47" TV cost me more than the 3D mind implant they have cost (Random idea on what might happen, don't hold me to it).

    According to Measuring Worth website.

If you were earning £100 in 1974 in 2011 you would be earning £1330. But in terms of RPI that £100 is only worth £885 leaving you £445 pounds better off compared to 1974 not that small amount.

Yes they do. We're significantly wealthier than the '70's. Whole industries have developed to try and extract that increased wealth from us. I prefer to prioritise housing over, say, male grooming products - other people make different choices.

It's nice to be able to tell yourself that but your own parents probably had to divert a bigger proportion of earnings to housing than you ever will.

The stuff you list weren't really an option for ordinary people. I'm mid-forties now - I was about 10 when we got a 'phone, 14/15 when we got a colour TV. BBC Micro - forget it - school managed to raise the cash for one - shared between 800 pupils.

Maybe not but you will be questioning the logic of people buying 3D mind implant chips when 'all they want' is a house.
