Carers Allowance Entitlement

Afternoon Everyone
Yet another question!
I am in the process of applying for DLA yet again, this time I am armed with more evidence and I am keeping hopeful.
My question is this: If I was successful would my Mum be entitled to claim Carers Allowance? Just Mum and myself living together.
She is retired, over 60, receiving half of my dads Civil Service Pension since he passed away of £110 per week, not in receipt of State Pension for another 2 years
Also, if able to claim CA, would her pension be effected? ie would she be taxed on it or lose some?
Thank you so much in advance, I really find the info online hard to understand x

you cant claim DLA anymore.
since june last year, all new claims have to be for PIP.
if you are awarded PIP ay either rate carers allowance could be claimed, but not by someone above pension age.
im not sure if that means state pension age, or the age at which pension credit can be claimed0 -
Assuming she isn't claiming ESA or anything, any occupational or private pension would not be affected.
She would lose it when she claims her state pension, although may retain underlying entitlement, which can help with other means tested benefit (such as housing benefit).
She will be taxed if her yearly income is within the amounts that tax becomes payable, which will depend on any other income she gets.
You will have to claim PIP.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

Thank yo. It must be a bit different with in NI with applying for DLA as its still able to be claimed. We must be a while behind the rest of the UKHappiest being skint & frugal

Hi Lin,
No she claims nothing and just gets Dads pension. She owns her own home so no HB and I can't claim any as she is a relation (unless things have changed).Happiest being skint & frugal

i dont know about northern ireland, but if you are claiming DLA, you would need at least the middle rate of care for a claim for carers allowance to be made.
you would need to show substantial care needs either throughout the day or throughout the night0 -

Northern Ireland is supposedly switching to PIP for new claims in the spring, but I'm not seen anything mentioning a date yet. Until then, adults can make new claims for DLA in Northern Ireland.
As nannytone says, you must be awarded DLA Care component at the middle or highest rate before anyone can be awarded Carer's Allowance for looking after you.0 -
Back again, I see, Andy!0

Your Mum can only get carers allowance if you receive middle or higher rate care award for DLA, or standard rate for care on PIP. However there is a rule where if you earn more than £100 a week you cannot claim it, however occupational pensions don't count towards this limit, so if she has no other income she'll be fine.
It doesn't matter if she lives with you is your mum, wife etc..
I cannot see anything that states an upper age limit but when she gets her state pension it will stop as you cannot claim both but as someone else has said there's an underlying entitlement0
