I want music on my mp4 player please....How ?

Me thick non-techie I'm afraid. ( 60+ )
Daughter has given me an mp4 player and gone abroad for a few months, so I'd like to put a compilation of my cds onto it.
There are no instructions with it, I can just about figure out how to turn it on........So you see my limitations.
I've got my cds
I've got a computer with xp media centre or whatever on it and Roxio Creator EL Dell edition.
I don't know how to get the cds onto my computer............pick the tracks I want, and then put them onto the player.
If anyone has the time and inclination could they tell me in plain English, step by step, how I could accomplish this incredibly difficult task.
This "Zimmer" wannabee would be very grateful !!!
