I'll just go put the kettle on and crack open a new packet of ginger nuts
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Moto ty but not very constructive answer. Enjoy ginger nuts.
  • Quick answer, no
Longer, No, probably not worth it
Final. Almost always no but if you have a special use for the car then maybe yes. Some specialist Japanese cars can actually require it but anything normal its a unessecery waste 99% of the time.

The VW FSi engines require it. We ran one with the company for 5yrs/200k (it was a Golf 1.6) on standard '95' fuel, and had no issues at all.

  • It might say require in the manual not sure but on 'lesser' fuel it'll have a knock sensor and automatically retard the ignition slightly. So it'll run without damage but it might register slightly less power, pottering round town it makes zero difference really.

So a 1% worry unless you own a GTR and then you should already know or why even buy it!

Been done to death on this forum, but anyway:
If you want to actually know this for your car, read the manual.
If it says it runs better on RON 97 or 98 (or higher) petrol (super unleaded) then it can take advantage. If it's a UK car it MUST run on RON 95 (unleaded). Any performance or economy figures quoted will be on the recommended fuel.
As a general rule, if it's a sports car, it'll take advantage, if it's not, it won't. That's very general though, and more engines are taking advantage.

Regardless of what you buy, make sure you buy at the cheapest petrol station.

I filled up yesterday £1.339 for diesel at Esso. Another station nearby I saw this morning is charging £1.479 for the same.

On my 65 litre tank that is £9.10 more expensive yet every pump had a car at it. Easy ways to save money if you are looking.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
