Also not sure if 7 fully supports ssd by default without tinkering a bit, due to ssd being newer than 7. http://www.maketecheasier.com/12-things-you-must-do-when-running-a-solid-state-drive-in-windows-7/

As many people have found, a recovery partition is often useless when the drive fails. Do a popper backup onto another disk.
Windows 7 installed fine on my 5 year old pc without any tinkering in the BIOS or Windows.

The only thing the OP may need to check is that the SSD is operating in AHCI mode.

When I migrated a PC from a hard disk to an SSD, I used Macrium Reflect to replicate the HD onto the SSD (which I attached via a USB caddy), and then just swapped them over and rebooted.

Having reflected (sorry for the pun) on how much legacy software I have on the laptop and how very long it took to configure it all, I have decided this is the best option for me too. It's downloading the free version of Macrium in readiness as I type.

    I've ordered this SSD ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E3915Y4/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    and this caddy ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FCLG65U/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Forgive me for sounding stupid, but I can't find the size in GB or TB of the first link.

It's in the description 'Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive' ... 500GB. :)

Typical Sunday, I'm not with it.

Surely though the price is a little steep. I've seen 1TB hard drives being sold for around £60

This is a solid state drive with no moving parts, more expensive and a lot faster than a conventional disc drive, plus I am going for a tried and trusted manufacturer.

Sure is. Samsung do a 1TB SSD in that range too but at £400 I really couldn't justify that. My existing drive in the lappy is 500GB and that is almost half full so a 256GB really would be cutting it too fine.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how much it improves overall speed because at the moment the efficiency rating is only 5.5 and it's the disc dragging it down. The disc is also making some ominous clicking noises so I think it's on its way out.

I need to spend some time pruning out anything I don't need on the lappy and then perform a defrag so it's in the best state when cloning.

Might not be the best idea, if its on its way out I'd get it copied asap
