Lloyds cashpoint

Have you ever been declined funds at a cash point - you should read this...

Last Friday I visited a cash point to withdraw cash from my Lloyds current account. I didn't have enough funds in my account to cover this so my request was rejected and I didn't receive any cash - fair enough I thought, and paid some more funds into that account when I was back in the office.

I then received a letter stating I had gone over drawn, and received charges for this. When I looked further into this, I noticed the cash I attempted to withdraw and didn't get had still been taken from my account!!! I telephoned the bank, they agreed to waive the charge but said if I get any more charges this year I will have to pay, as I only get one waive a year. They said they would investigate what I was saying about the cash point and get back to me. Sure enough they did get back to me and admit they had taken money from my account which I unsuccessfully attempted to withdraw, and agreed to refund.

The same thing happened to me about 20 years ago, they have obviously have done nothing about correcting this glitch, or is it intentional? I find it crazy that they can decline my money at the cash point and still take the funds from my account. I also find it surprising that no one else seems to have noticed this happens, or do we just forget by the time we come and look at our bank statements?

So has anyone else noticed this from Lloyds or any other bank?

If you ever have funds declined at the cash point I would urge you to keep a note and check you bank to see if the funds are still taken from your account.

You have machines. In any walk of life machines go wrong. You've been hit by the ATM phenomena twice in twenty years. This suggests it's a rare occurrence. The most common reason is that the cassette that holds the cash has reached it's last note. It could be caused by a torn bank note catching in the mechanism. It may even be an electronic blip. Or a handful of other reasons.

If you want to go and invent a machine that has perfect reliability you will become a very rich individual. Go for it.

    Machine goes wrong.

Account gets debited when it shouldn't have done.

    Bank corrects problem.

Customer uses emotive language like robbed.

When it's clear nobody has been robbed.
If you ever have funds declined at the cash point I would urge you to keep a note and check you bank to see if the funds are still taken from you account.
I would go a step further. And check everything on those statement things they issue.

Was it a Lloyds ATM each time ?
  • "If you've ever been declined funds at a cashpoint" you should probably get into the habit of requesting a balance check first. Then it shouldn't matter if Lloyds ATM facility has a 'glitch' or not!
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

  • Thanks for your responses. This happened twice in 20 years as that is the amount of times I have not had enough cash in the account to cover what I attempted to withdraw. I take you point about checking to see if I have enough funds, I do think it is far enough to have my cash rejected if I don't have the funds.

As for the suggestion about the cash getting snagged in the machine, this is not the case as in both times the machine didn't attempt to pay out, it refused to, but still took the funds from my account.

I was wondering, was the twice it happens to me a just a glitch, or does this happen every time a cash point declines funds?
  • As you have been told machines have glitches - everything in your house will have a glitch from time to time - just think about it - how many washing machines have you got through in last 20 years?
These days it is a straightforward process a refund to your account if you try to withdraw cash from an ATM and it fails.
Quite often the machine recognises there has been a problem and refunds you automatically - if not you tell the bank and they will put the money back into your account the same day.

Unless you were using a transparent ATM you simply don't know this.

A note could get snagged long before it reaches the dispense area.

It is a very rare exception.

The fact you were rejected was because you made the attempt to be overdrawn and they stopped it. The funds do not have to be paid out at any stage. It takes its cue from them bouncing a cheque you might have written where there is no funds available. The charge for the bounce but have no obligation to pay the presenter. As it was the account holder who attempted to take funds that were not there - the charge is correct.

As others noted - balance enquiries are free, and you can avoid this charge easily.

I think either you or I have misunderstood the nature of the OPs complaint. My reading of his original post is that the OP went to an ATM and asked to withdraw a certain amount of money. The ATM refused to give him that amount of money because to do so would have made him over drawn. But the bank then debited the amount requested from his balance anyhow, even though it hadn't dispensed the cash, which made him go overdrawn anyhow and incurred charges.
