Travel sick puppy

Hi, any advice gratefully received.

We have a six month old Jack Russell puppy. Every time as take het in the car she is sick. We have tried with her travelling in a crate, or with her restrained in the back of the car, neither works.

I have tried not feeding her before we go but she throws up any water she drank.

We are planning to take her away on a caravan holiday to Wales in April and I am dreading the journey.

Speak to a vet, they may be able to prescribe anti sickness or motion sickness tablets

I had a dog like this many years ago.

The vet prescribed tranquillisers for him which did help.

I would recommend you build up car journeys very slowly. Even just starting right from scratch having the dog in the car without it being turned on, to stationary with the engine running, 1 minute up the road, 5 minutes, 10, 20, etc.

This worked with my GSD who'd get horribly car sick when I first adopted him (aged 2.5 - it's not just a puppy thing!) and we could manage several hours eventually (got stuck on the M25 for 4 hours once! He just slept the whole time). He did develop car sickness again when I changed cars, so I repeated the process and he's fine again now.

My bearded collie was very car sick as a pup but outgrew it quite quickly. Loves the car now!

This is what we did when our dog was a puppy. We had a long journey home and although we stopped often he was very sick and it put him off the car.

It takes a bit of time but worked for us.

  • Our Jack Russell is now 10 months old and has only managed one journey without being sick. The Johnsson travel sickness tablets helped a lot, plus we put the back seats of the car down and put a guard up against the back of the front seats, so he had the whole of the back of the car, with a bed and lots of space. The one journey he managed without being sick at all was 1.5 hours long and it was, for the first time ever, at night. Apparently, the less they can see out of the window, the better it is for them. I am really hoping he grows out of it but in the meantime we'll be doing any long journeys at night!
