Astra coil problems

My daughters 54 reg Astra 1.4 has had 5 coil packs fitted in the last 2 years with the last one being fitted a week ago. Coming home from work last night, the engine management light came on again and the car went into "get you home mode" with no power and uneven engine. These are the same symptons as before. The AA have fitted new coil packs on each occasion and the car is ok until the next time. There is obviously an underlying problem, we are wondering if its the ECU but dont want to change this expensive item if its not the cause of the problem. Can anyone on here advise us as to what the problem is please?

Changed the leads and plugs at the same time? Genuine parts or cheap copies?

  • has any one actually checked for fault codes or are they just changing the coils because these coils aren't cheap.

have you checked the plugs, leads etc

Yes, AA changed plugs and leads on last occasion

AA plugged their computer in each time so assume they had the fault codes. Believe the coils were genuine parts.
  • the AA aren't mechanics a proper garage with diagnostics equipment needs to look into this & tell you the exact fault codes

AA changed the plugs and leads. Have you actually had it serviced properly and a garage to look over why it maybe killing the coils?

Could be a dodgy connection somewhere.

  • My Mondeo suffered the same problem.

If I used the Bosch pack, I'd get 4-5 months out of it tops.

I had to use the official Motorcraft one.

Added to that, the underlying fault is only going to lie in three locations. The coil pack itself, the leads or the plugs. Sadly, there's no way you can determine where the problem is.

Your only solution to stop the breakdowns is to change out the pack, leads and plugs all at the same time. Bit of a layout, but at least it saves in the long run.

Doing this, I got at least a year out of the Mondeo setup.
