He was here about a year in the end and yes he did pay me every month to cover the internet he was using, heating etc as I couldn't afford the extra costs. I just know it is a game of words with these people so I want to be fully informed before I contact them0

Have a look at non-dependent deductions on your councils site. This will show the amount that your benefits would have been reduced by based on the income of your friend
example http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/500180/housing_benefit/4285/non-dependants_adults_living_with_you_affect_your_housing_benefit_and_council_tax_support/2 (figures will likely be the same for your council)
You will then be able to work out what overpayment they may be looking at0 -

I agree.
You will probably not have a problem with HMRC especially if you can gather some 'evidence together' as said above.
However, Council Tax Support and Housing Benefit should have been notified as to a change of circumstances.
As you had no lodger's agreement with your friend then I believe that he would have been classed as a non dependant for both CT and HB.
Am not sure about single person's discount for CT and second adult rebate???? Can someone else comment?
If you have received an overpayment then arrangements can be made to have it deducted form your current HB and CT claim.
You may want to discuss with your friend and see if he can help you out financially if you feel this is appropriate.0 -
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it0
