Advice please, before debt recovery agency get involved

Hi,
I am a member of a worldwide branded gym franchise. I pay £57 per month for the privilege. Their main method of contact is email and facebook. I stopped going to this gym a while ago, so decided to suspend my direct debits. I wrote to the company via facebook at the same time (Jan) and they replied saying not to worry about it, and they hoped to see me return in the future. Then, about a month later, I received an email saying my account was in arrears and I should pay. I contacted the company by email return, and explained that I had cancelled my membership, etc. I received no reply to this, so just forgot about it.
Now i have received a Final Reminder in the post threatening to employ a debt recovery agency and this could harm my finance rating. I contacted the company back on facebook asking what I needed to do, and got a reply from one of the owners, Ben, who said 'don't worry about it, we will square it away our end'.
I'm concerned, as their admin doesn't appear to be great, and the owners of this franchise are several people who work there. What happens if Ben forgets to tell the others, and then they instruct a debt recovery agency. I don't want my credit rating affected!
The only thing I think I may have done wrong, is not give a months cancellation notice, but as I am quite friendly with the owners, I thought they may have waived this for me.
Any suggestions? What are my rights if they employ a debt recovery agency, and my rating gets affected?

Can you go in there yourself and speak to them?0

Have your read contract ? Contacting them through Facebook is most likely not the correct way of terminating your contract.0

I guess I'm going to have to, just to make sure it's all settled.0
