Credit card newbie - can I pay in full BEFORE direct debit?

Options
Hi all,

quick question and potentially a silly one!

I have just had my first credit card statement, and I have set up to pay the balance off in full every month by direct debit.

My statement shows that the direct debit will be taken on March 17th.

However, I get paid on Feb 28th, so would ideally like to have cleared the balance on pay day.

If I make a manual payment of the full amount on Feb 28th, will that be ok?

I assume it will and that there will then be nothing else taken on 17th March, but I just want to check as obviously I don't want to get into ANY credit related hot water!

Thanks in advance for any answers.

For reference I have a Capital One Classic. :)

Ring your CC company and ask if they can change the date of the DD to the 1st of each month, then you don't have to bother making manual payments. Its always a risk paying up front because there is always a chance that they may take a payment by DD.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

    Thanks McKneff, that sounds sensible.

Search for an alternative number, e.g. Calling from abroad - general queries +44 115 993 8002

Always make use of Saynoto0870. I have got loads of Freephone numbers and generic numbers from there
    Which cc is it.

  • If you manage your card online, you should also be able to change your DD payment date there. Many credit card providers use the same management platform and its not uncommon to offer this functionality.

Some cards will reduce the outstanding balance if you make a manual payment at least 5 days before the DD is due. Others need to to call to cancel them taking the DD for that month.

Eg Halifax Clarity, you need to call them, Aqua and Natiownide you don't. I have never needed to adjust a payment with Capital One despite being with them for years. However I did contact them to change the date the DD was taken to suit.
